BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Monumental Sergio Rodrigues Jacaranda Rosewood & Granite Credenza, 1960s Brazil
By Bernardo Figueiredo, Sergio Rodrigues
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This monumental and important Jacaranda Rosewood sideboard / credenza by Sergio Rodrigues was created with the architect Bernardo Figuiredo for a custom installation in a mid-century modern Rio de Janeiro home in Brazil in which we acquired it from. Bernardo often collaborated with Sergio and his company OCA on projects and this one is quite special, the entire dining suite was designed and created together which we have in other listings if you wish to purchase the entire set. This credenza / sideboard cabinet features large round solid Jacaranda handles which give personality to this piece. Topped with a huge granite slab - the photos don't do it justice as there was much glare coming from the photography lights. In normal room lighting it is a gorgeous dark black speckled granite top with some deep brown and silver grey flecks. Inside the large cabinet doors are open cubby spaces with removable shelves and four pull out drawers in exotic Brazilian Rosewood. Shown in the photos are the matching trestle base and granite top dining table...

Carlo Hauner for Forma Brazil Large Rosewood Credenza on Plinth Base, circa 1960
By Forma Brazil, Carlo Hauner
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Newly imported from a private collector in Brazil, this impressive credenza by Carlo Hauner for Forma Brazil emulates the quality and innovation of Brazilian Modern design. Fabricated from dark Brazilian rosewood which shows a dramatic grain, this expansive sideboard is punctuated with circular black chunky concave pulls on the drawers and finger holes on the sliding doors to allow for ease of movement. These sliding drawers reveal a shelves either side for storing table linens, crockery, glassware, liquor and other household items. Fragment of Forma Brazil manufacturing label on the back of the credenza. Brazilian Modern is fantastic alternative to the usual suspects seen in Mid-Century Modern design furniture. The use of clean lines and minimal form of this piece make it appropriate for a number of locations, from Classic and contemporary homes to elegant executive offices to hip startups. It would also be great in a hospitality, retail or corporate location, such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, director's office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Consider pairing with our Percival Lafer sofas and coffee tables or our Sergio Rodrigues Tonico chairs...
