Swedish 1800s Gustavian White Painted Two-Part Cabinet

About the Item

A two-tiered wooden cabinet from the early 19th century Swedish Gustavian period. The top section opens to a shelf for hanging wine glasses and a small drawer for storing cutlery. The middle section has an open shelf with scalloped accents. The lower section has four drawers. It is painted in a soft white with a nice antique look, typical of the Swedish preference for lighter tones, intended to brighten up the room during the long, dark Scandinavian winters. The Gustavian style has its roots in the Louis XVI era. King Gustav III of Sweden stayed in Paris in 1771, at the dawn of the Louis XVI style. There he was inspired by French art and fashion, which fuelled his desire to introduce something similar to it in Sweden. Sweden had excellent craftsmen with high quality workmanship, which created a simple style with a harmonious aesthetic. The Gustavian style was born and has continued to receive high praise around the world ever since, even today, and is held in a special position among antique furniture.
