19th Century American Cutler & Sons Model 1 Roll Top Desk
About the Item
Presenting a glorious piece of Americana namely, a 19th century American Cutler & Sons model 1 roll top desk.
This is the prototype of the well-known Cutler & Sons patented desk and could very possibly be the exhibition piece for the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876.
Known as Model No 1 this desk was one of the very first model desks made by Cutler to show off its recently patented roll top or cylinder fronted desk with the front of the desk folding under the desk section.
You will see the marketing brochure (with the photos) wherein this desk is called “The Best Cylinder Desk in the World. Cutler’s Patent Business Desks. No 1. Full French Plate Glass Top, elegantly paneled and veneered front, ends and back.” The pricing is noted thereon as $162.
Made of a combination of walnut with gorgeous burl walnut panels. Stunning swirl detail to the back and sides.
The French plate glass panels are all original with beveled edges.
The removable interior shelving consists of 12 cubbies with 4 drawers attached by 2 brass rods and a central brass carousel clip holder with the word ‘standard’.
The desk is lined with green felt or baize.
The base section consists of 2 pullout / pull-out writing panels and 4 drawers on either pillar. 3 small and one larger one to the bottom. The drawers are full marked (see photos).
Fantastic detail throughout and in great condition for its age.
The reason we believe that this could easily have been one of the desks, Cutler exhibited in Philadelphia in 1876, is because it is one of their very rare model number 1 desks and the detail and quality is what one would expect in an exhibition piece. The glass panels on all sides and on the top are clearly designed so that one can still view the interior with the desk front up. What better way to show off or exhibit your newly patented roll top mechanism?

Early 19th Century American Sheraton Tilt-Top Table of Neat Proportions
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING a GORGEOUS Early 19C American Sheraton Tilt top Table of very desirable neat proportions.
Made in America, possibly New York or New England, circa 1800.
Made of Walnut, cherrywood and satinwood.
The table is diamond in shape and the turned tripod base and feet appear to be made of walnut.
The feet have beautifully simple, pointed toe feet …. ‘classic’ examples of ‘period’ American side tables of this Era!
The square platform, attaching to the top to the base, has a brass catch/latch insert, with a ‘period’ brass button clasp on the underside of the table top, for the tilting mechanism.
The square table top, itself, appears to be mainly cherry wood for the central square section, which in turn is then encased in a walnut square border and edged with a beautifully patinated striped satinwood.
The central diamond on the table top is likewise a striped/burl satinwood of very high quality, edged with boxwood.
There is a visible crack on the top and it appears that at some stage in its history, someone turned the table top 90 degrees, so that the baton supports underneath would support the weakened section with the crack. We have no doubt, however, that the top is original to the base and not a ‘marriage’, as the line (as one can see in the photos) on the base of the top where the batons were previously located perfectly matches the existing batons.
The table is very ‘stable’ but the top (once locked in the down position) has a very slight lean towards the repaired cracked section. This is not significant and does not detract from the beauty and utility of this piece. We have, however, reflected these repairs, etc. in our pricing.
It is also obvious, that the table was ‘always’ diamond shaped.
It is the use of the cherry and walnut, coupled with the toe feet, that tells us, that this is ‘unmistakably’ an American Sheraton piece.
Provenance: From an Outstanding Private Dallas Collection.
Condition: Very good. See the full listing (above) for more detail on minor defects.
Dimensions: 26.75 inches tall with top down, The table top is 17.2 inches x 17.8 inches
With the top tilted it is 39.25 inches Tall and has a depth/width at the feet of 19.75 inches.

ANGLO-INDIAN AND CEYLONESE BOXES: Anglo Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents from the early part of the 18th century. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins.
Anglo-indian Boxes normally consist of 3 main types:-
(1) Most of the best and highest quality Anglo-Indian boxes in the 18th and 19th Centuries were made in Vizagapatam, India, renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship in using ivory and tortoiseshell and lac decoration. These are referred to as ‘Vizagapatam Boxes...
