A French bureau plat/desk by the Parisian cabinetmaker Mathieu Béfort, also known as Béfort Jeune. Inspired by the iconic designs of André-Charles Boulle, a celebrated 17th-century French cabinet-maker, this late 19th-century piece showcases Béfort's mastery of the Regency style.
The ebony frame is adorned with intricate marquetry inlays and exquisitely chiseled, matte and burnished ormolu mounts. The delicate foliage and acanthus leaf motifs, along with the captivating Bacchus heads and female masks, lend an air of opulence to the work. The central drawer, flanked by single drawers on each side, enhances the piece's refined functionality.
Raised on graceful cabriole legs adorned with ormolu accents and paw-claws, the desk is crowned by a serpentine-edged leather top with embossed gilt trim. Béfort Jeune's exceptional attention to detail makes this bureau plat a true masterpiece of French furniture craftsmanship. Marks related to the maker can be found underneath the bronze pieces that decorate the corners of the desk.
The Béfort family workshop, located in Paris, was renowned for producing high-quality pieces that caught the eye of discerning patrons, including Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. Mathieu Béfort's work, with its superior quality and timeless elegance, continues to captivate collectors and connoisseurs.
