About the Item

Presenting an absolutely gorgeous mid-late 19th century British Chinese Chippendale style cylinder desk from the renowned maker of Hampton & Sons, of Pall Mall, London. This stunning piece is elegant simplicity at it’s best with the most gorgeous natural age and patina to its surface and stunning details to the legs and throughout. We estimate this to be from circa 1860–1870. It is made of the most beautiful mahogany with stunning natural patina. The top is in ‘cylindrical’ form which as it is raised the writing desk moves outwards. Once opened, it reveals a writing slope with original tooled green leather, 5 drawers and 8 open ‘cubbies’. Below the writing slope are three drawers. The first two are smaller side by sides and the bottom one is one single drawer. The smaller drawer on the right has had a lock and escutcheon installed some time after manufacture which slightly covers the makers mark…..But…..the makers mark is unmistakably for the renowned London furniture maker, Hampton & Sons. This is a really quality piece! Hampton and Sons Ltd of Pall Mall East, Trafalgar Square London Established in 1830 in Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square by William Hampton, later being joined by his sons, George and William, the company moved to 8 Pall Mall East, adjacent to Trafalgar Square, in very large premises, trading as builders and surveyors, estate agents, ‘antique and modern furniture dealers’, general furnishers, upholsterers, plumbers and electricians. Their commissions included, inter alia, the furnishing of the Royal Yacht Britannia, the liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, the Theatre Royal in Drury lane, and the palaces of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maharajah of Kashmir. An incendiary bomb destroyed the building in 1940, after which they moved to Kensington High Street, where they traded until 1960.

Repaired: Couple of repairs to feet. We believe that the marble top is a later addition. Wear consistent with age and use. Very Good. One minor repair to front right leg but not very noticeable and does not adversely affect the piece. We are of the opinion that the green marble top is a later replacement and it would originally have had a wooden gallery on top.

18th Century George II Miniature Campaign Bureau Chest on Later Chest Stand
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING A GORGEOUS and beautifully proportioned Mid-18th Century George II Miniature Campaign Bureau Chest on later Chest/Stand. Mid-18th century, made in Britain, circa 1760-1770. The bureau chest sits on a later stand/chest, that we estimate is late 19th century, circa 1860-1880. It is also British. We believe that the primary wood in this piece is either Elm or Sycamore with mahogany elements. Classic Campaign style miniature Bureau Chest, with its ORIGINAL George II brass hardware, including handles on the sides for easy carriage, which is what proves to us, that this chest was made for campaign purposes. The brasses are GORGEOUS and are classically George II in style, design and construction. The quality, thickness and patina to the brasses, is what ‘initially’ tells us, that this is a ‘period’ piece and not a reproduction. Likewise, the dovetailing detail to the drawers, tells us that this was a hand crafted piece and certainly NOT machine made. The secondary woods appear to be a combination of oak and pine, exactly as one would expect. The central keyhole escutcheons are FANTASTIC and are in the form of a pair of opposing ‘lyres’. We have never seen anything like them! Beautiful natural patina! The ‘brasses’ look like they have been polished a ‘little too often and vigorously’, over the piece’s 250+ years history … BUT … the bonus of this cleaning is the creation of a rather appealing, '2 Tone effect’, on the patina of the wood around the brasses. The Bureau has a flat gallery...

Made in England at the end of the 19th Century (circa 1890) this is a stunning replica of an original Queen Anne piece from the late 17th/early 18th Century ! The attention to detail is outstanding from the use of the correct period veneers, right down to the banding and parquetry inlays, to the hardware. It is a diminutive desk as it should be as desk from the Queen Anne period were much, much smaller than desks made today due to the fact that in the 17/18th Century people were much smaller. Anne (6 February 1665 – 1 August 1714) was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland between 8 March 1702 and 1 May 1707. On 1 May 1707, under the Acts of Union, the kingdoms of England and Scotland united as a single sovereign state known as Great Britain. She continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1714. Anne was born in the reign of Charles II to his younger brother and heir presumptive, James, whose suspected Roman Catholicism was unpopular in England. On Charles’s instructions, Anne and her elder sister, Mary, were raised as Anglicans. Mary married their Dutch Protestant cousin, William III of Orange...
