About the Item

Multifunctional swivel chair/desk designed by Fredrik Mattson for Blå Station, Sweden in 2001. Innovation C is now dressed up all monochrome for its 20-year anniversary! Using a tablet, a laptop or whatever electronic device simplifies the working environment, the workplace not confined to a desk but possible everywhere. New ways of working demanding new furniture typologies. Fredrik Mattson’s Innovation C was almost a big question mark shaped as strong graphic icon: how can it be used? Is the arm a backrest or a little table? But sure, it is both! Make your choice: rest or work, or just sit. Swivel around to take in the view. Innovation C remains the original multifunctional furniture piece two decades later. Design is supposed to be more than just function, it is about communication, to adopt an international approach triggered by contemporary challenges. Redesigning old typologies is not the future, but inventing new ones. Fredrik Mattson’s first award was presented by the Princess Lilian while the press raved about Innovation C. Twenty years later, Innovation C remains the original multifunctional furniture piece for the urban nomad and the causal workplace of the future: an upholstered chair, a bookrest, a chaise lounge covered with lush fabric or leather, a working space.

“Squash” Brown Sofa by Paolo Deganello for Driade
By Paolo Deganello
Located in Pasadena, CA
Sculptural, Minimalist 1980s sofa by famed Italian designer Paolo Deganello (b. 1940). The sofa is discussed in “Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000,” by G. Gramigna, p. 212 (2003). In 1966 Deganello cofounded the Archizoom Associati in Florence. The collective was named after the British group of architects known as Archigram and the journal “Zoom.” Part of the radical design movement in Italy, Archizoom created anti-design furniture, such as the corner set “Safari” and the “San Remo” palm-frond lamp (both 1968 for Poltronova). After the group ended in the early 1970s, he continued with his private practice as an architect and designer in Milan, with commissions in Italy and abroad. Deganello’s work was featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York’s groundbreaking, “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,” in 1972. The Squash sofa...
