About the Item

A charming Victorian period mahogany pedestal desk, dating from circa 1880. The oblong-shaped top features a thumb-moulded edge and is inset with a tooled and gilt-edged leather skiver. Beneath runs a row of three frieze drawers, set above twin pedestals. Each pedestal is fitted with a bank of three graduated drawers. All drawers retain their original mahogany turned knob handles, brass escutcheons, and working locks, together with the original key. The pedestals stand on plinth bases, each discreetly fitted with its four hidden castors. Constructed on a pine frame with mahogany veneers, the desk has developed a warm patina and retains its authentic late Victorian character. A lovely original piece, in good working order and ready for everyday use. Dimensions Height (to top): 74.5 cm (29.25") Width: 115 cm (45.25") Depth: 50.5 cm (19.75") Knee hole clearance: 59 cm (23.25") high × 42.25 cm (16.625") wide Condition This desk is in good original condition, structurally sound and very sturdy. The gilt-tooled leather skiver shows light wear appropriate to its age but remains serviceable and attractive. There are minor marks, blemishes, and signs of use consistent with over 140 years of age, including some minor veneer losses. All drawers open smoothly, with original turned handles, brass escutcheons, and working locks (key included). The desk has been sensitively serviced, cleaned, and wax-polished, ensuring it is now fully ready for use. As with all antique furniture, some signs of wear and imperfections should be expected and are part of its period charm.
