About the Item

Antique dressing table - stamped Chapuis Brussels Mahogany Empire around 1810 Dimensions: H x W x D: 178 x 91 x 56 cm, height without mirror: 82 cm Description: Elaborately crafted early 19th century dressing table from the workshop of Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864) in Brussels. Chest of drawers with eight drawers in four rows, standing on bun feet. The upper wide drawer is divided into three compartments on the inside, which are protected from dust by sliding covers. The outer compartment covers have the appearance of a roller shutter thanks to the alternating strips of mahogany and ebony. Fire-gilt lion heads serve as handles for the drawers and, like the flanking caryatids, contrast beautifully with the dark wood. Below the two upper lion heads, two further golden knobs catch the eye - handles for a pull-out tray for storing make-up utensils. On the top plate, we see two solid brass rails that serve as guides for the mirror. The mirror is adjustable in depth as well as tilt. A special feature for which Jean-Joseph Chapuis was famous. The master's stamp can be found on the front edges of the drawers. It is worth mentioning a few beautiful details that are not immediately obvious: If we look at the edge of the top, we can see that the mahogany wood is discreetly emphasised by dark ebony edging that ends in curves. The thread inlay in the frame of the mirror has a similar effect. Condition: Refurbished condition, shellac hand polish. The drawers run smoothly, the locks work. Suitable for everyday use and ready for immediate use.

Large Empire chest of drawers Paris Mahogany Early 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 97 x 136 x 68 cm Description: The architecturally designed front of the chest of drawers is divided into three zones. A plinth connected to the floor forms the lower section, on which two sturdy columns rest, supporting the upper section, which houses a large drawer. Three further drawers are housed in the centre section of the chest of drawers, which recedes behind the columns. A black granite top forms the upper end. The drawers, the back panel and the body are made of oak, except for the panels in the side walls. The top section with the ledge drawer is connected to the body with wooden wedges and can be removed for transport. This detail can be clearly seen in one of the photos. Exquisitely beautiful mahogany veneer, horizontally mirrored on the drawers at the height of the key entrances, enlivens the smooth surfaces on which the lavishly gilded bronzes unfold their effect. Some of the very finely crafted fittings can also be found on Empire furniture by Jacob...
