About the Item

A Very Attractive Late 18th Century George III Period Oak Dresser Base, Of Relatively Small & Compact Proportions, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Drawers With Replacement Brass Knobs To Arched Frieze, Raised On ELegant Turned Upright Supports And Original Potboard Shelf Below. An attractive dresser base which is a useful small size and therefore perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst many other features. It is also of course very elegant and retains a good colour and patina as a consequence of many years hard graft and use, combined with love and care. There is very little damage to speak of, certainly nothing visually unappealing, or which causes a structural problem and although the brass handles are replacements they are old, probably 18th century themselves and actually sit very nicely on the piece indeed. They have clearly been in situ for a very long time. As suggested by the name the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves damaged beyond repair, or in rather ugly condition visually. No such problem with this particular piece however, it has a perfectly functioning and attractive potboard shelf. As with all items which we offer for sale this dresser base has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has recieved a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home environment. Circa 1790. Height 33.75in. Width 60in. Depth 14.25in.
