Art Deco Bar Cabinet with Walnut Veneer

About the Item

This is a large and luxurious vintage French sideboard completely in the Art Deco style, c. 1935. The piece features ample storage accessed from four full-height doors resting on nickel lift-off hinges. The end doors are gracefully curved, opening in clamshell fashion from hinges in the rear. The end compartments are divided into three equal spaces, divided horizontally by fixed shelves. The center compartment is very large, also divided into three volumes separated by removeable shelves. If the piece is used as a bar, the upper shelf could be removed and placed below, allowing for storage of tall liquor bottles and bar furnishings. The interior is appointed in mahogany. The round lock plate hardware is solid nickel, which has gently tarnished over time. The center handles angle stylishly inward. The piece stands proud of a solid mahogany plinth with stepped horizontal bands. The original (and now rare) nero portoro marble top is without cracks or chips but does show minor scratches in the center, consistent with the age of the piece and prior use as a bar. The lively pattern in the marble is unusually even and consistent. The stone top rests on a protruding mahogany step that is also the top edge of the case below. The doors project forward slightly from the frame, creating another elegant step. The most striking element of the piece is its book-matched amboyna burl (padauk) veneers. The sheets are enormous and richly figured, showing multiple tones, interesting swirls, countless eyes and other unique features. The complex details blend gracefully together and don’t overwhelm the piece’s sophisticated and restrained Art Deco lines.
