Paul Evans, 72'' Wall-mounted Sculpted Bronze Disc Bar

About the Item

A dynamic hand-sculpted, wall-mounted cabinet, Paul Evans’ Disc Bar, is arguably one of Evans’ most iconic designs. The sculptural design is monumental in size at six feet in diameter. Closed, the round disc is a sensational tondo relief. Opened, the two doors reveal a wall-mounted case bar with the original black laminate interior, sculpted bronze cabinet and drawer. The entire piece is finished in an atomized bronze with a carbon patina, this work is in excellent original condition and has never undergone nor needed any restoration. This technique, developed by the Evans Studio, is known as Sculpted Bronze and is the basis for Evan’s Directional series of the same name. The Disc Bar was originally handcrafted by five men working in the studio with Evans. The piece perfectly conveys and reflects the trippy, heady moment of the late 1960s in which it was first designed. The Disc Bar became one of Evan’s most publicized designs and was introduced at Directional in 1964. The work is equal parts old-fashioned craft, organic artistry, and experimental technology. The distinctive design suggests an abstract ancient Aztecc calendar whose doors open to reveal a modern wet bar. The Bronze series was the longest and bestselling series by Evans for Directional. Paul Evans took a unique approach to furniture making, a combination of handcraft wedded to technology that anticipated the limited edition art furniture of today. The artist’s relationship with Directional set a unique standard for creative manufacture, as described in a brochure from 1975, “Every piece is made by hand, One piece at a time. Every piece is finished by hand. One piece at a time. And every piece is supervised every step of the way by the artist who conceived it — Paul Evans.” Sculpted Bronze 72h x 72w x 16d in 182.88h x 182.88w x 40.64d cmq
