About the Item
Cotswold School manner oak linen cupboard / chest of drawers. Circa 1930s.
The top having handmade through dovetail construction to the sides, with vertical Yew wood inlay. Panelled doors sit above three graduating drawers, the whole having hand carved chamfered detail, including the handles. The two panelled doors reveal a linen drawer with three dividers, and two small drawers above. All drawer sides and backs are made of white cedar with handmade dovetail construction to the fronts. The chest stands on tapered legs with ebony dowel detail.
The chest is in excellent condition, and has been sympathetically re-finished by hand in a matte sheen, and has a smooth waxed finish, still retaining light authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. The natural solid oak showing differences in shades.
The drawers are all in very good working order. There is a small mark to the inside of the top drawer, the rest are all very clean. The base has been made so this can be removed, as shown.

George III English Satinwood & Banded Bow Fronted Chest Commode Circa 1790
Located in Norwich, GB
A superb George III satinwood bow fronted four drawer chest/commode. English. Circa 1790.
The commode chest has four long graduated drawers over a shaped apron, on splayed feet. It retains the original brass handles, which is rare.
Veneered over solid oak in the finest quarter-sawn satinwood, banded in rosewood and mahogany, with boxwood stringing throughout.
It has has been sympathetically re-finished, still retaining some authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. To the left hand side near the back there is some slight damage to the banding and a small piece of veneer has been re-glued back on near the escutcheon of the third drawer down. Please refer to the photographs.
The drawers are lined in oak with handmade dovetail construction. The drawer sides have had slivers of oak added to make the drawers run better.
The underside of the top has neat butterfly construction to the oak join, always a sign of a well made piece. There is no woodworm.
Originally a commode occupied a prominent position in a house, not always for bedroom use...
