18th Century Chinoiserie Secretaire in Lacquer by Jacques Dubois (1694-1763)

About the Item

A brown-red low secretary in lacquer adorned with chinoiserie motifs by the great French cabinetmaker Jacques Dubois (1694-1763). This exquisite piece of furniture features a single flap and two doors for access. The desk's surface and the pull tab are elegantly sheathed in leather. Upon opening, you'll find its interior adorned with five small curved drawers in rosewood and rosewood veneer. The front and sides of the secrétaire are each veneered with a single panel of red Asian lacquer, the panel on the front having been cut into three pieces to form the fall front and the doors. The remaining exterior surfaces and the entire interior are decorated with red European lacquer. The secretary is further embellished with high-quality, ornate chiseled and gilded mercury bronze accents. Crowned with a royal red corbin beak marble top, gently curved along three sides, it adds a touch of regal elegance. The Chinese-themed characters and scenes are set in hues of chamomile, black, and gold over a brown-red lacquer background. It is imprinted with its official Jurande mark on the upper right front post. This piece exemplifies Dubois's distinctive craftsmanship and is a rare find in today's furniture market. Jacques Dubois (1694-1763) is a renowned cabinetmaker from the Louis XV era. As an expert in veneer, marquetry, and a specialist in lacquer and varnish, he crafted furniture in the rococo style. He is most known for creating furniture adorned with panels of Chinese and Japanese lacquer, as well as Vernis Martin. Jacques Dubois often collaborated with his fellow artisans, such as Pierre IV Migeon. Later, he became the royal cabinetmaker, producing furniture for the likes of Duke of Orleans, the Duchess of Parma, and the French nobility. His son René, who also became a master in 1755, continued his work, but in the Louis XVI style. Jacques Dubois' signature mark bears the inscription 'IDUBOIS
