Model U-452 – 1950’s two door cabinet by Jiri Jiroutek for Interieur Praha
Model U-452 – 1950’s two door cabinet by Jiri Jiroutek for Interieur Praha. These cabinets by Praha are increasingly popular due to their practical size and this piece is a great example. Finished with Oak externally, and featuring two sliding doors in a soft white (hard to photograph white, it has a very light grey tint as opposed to a sharp white) that work perfectly. The hidden back panel retains a hint of pattern we assume was from years placed against a decorated wall surface, we liked the character so we have left it untouched. In excellent original condition our workshop has gently restored the piece to bring out the original colour whilst retaining the patina and depth of colour that age brings. The internal shelf is full span, as shot internal height of top shelf is 26cm, bottom shelf 27cm, depth 38cm. The shelf has three adjustable heights, 3cm above or below centre. Overall internal size is 39 D x 107 W x 55 H. All cm.

Jiri Jiroutek
Few designers anywhere have created pieces that more distinctly shout mid-century modern than Jiri Jiroutek. Even as a young designer, Jiroutek reenvisioned the fabrication and functionality not only of cabinets and kitchen furnishings but also interior architecture.
However, it was the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair that ultimately inspired the Czech designer's funky, colorful, decorative yet multifunctional U-450 cabinets of the late ’50s and early ’60s that made Jiroutek a leading figure in the so-called Czech Brussels school.
Jiroutek's influence didn’t stop there. After revising an Ikea prototype design at the firm’s request in 1958, Jiroutek received an invitation from Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad to join the company in Stockholm. The designs he created there in the late 1960s, as well as others inspired by his work at the renowned manufacturer Interiér Praha, remain Ikea best sellers to this day.
