About the Item

Unusual pair of étagères, made circa 1845-1850 in England in a round form are masculine and formal but not fussy or over decorated. The Mahogany color is warm and light not a deep red as is so often found. The finish is original and mellow but with a nice rich polish. Four levels for display make them useful and as they are tall make them almost column-like creating visual impact. The wood selection is clean and linear in grain and the turnings are refined and uniform creating an undulating erect movement. These chairs from circa 1840 are well made and retain the original split cane woven inset seat mats. The wood is finished in a deep rich red transparent lacquer giving the wood a lustrous finish . They are generous in scale and comfortable and original throughout. The arms are carved in a bamboo pattern and the central splat is decorated with a pierced Chinese linguistic character.
