Pierre Chapo, "B17 LONGUE" Bookshelf, circa 1967

About the Item

"B17 Longue" bookshelf by Pierre Chapo, circa 1967, in elmwood. Beautiful example of the timeless design mastery of Pierre Chapo (1927 - 1986). In 1967, Pierre Chapo presented new creations at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, exhibiting the B17 bookshelf for the first time. The B 17 is fixed to the wall, freeing up considerable floor space. The bookshelf, whose presence surprises by its discretion and elegance, comes in several versions of differing lengths and heights. The harmony of the lines between the uprights and the shelves (in 50 mm sections) is accentuated by the originality of the support system. Supports, as their name implies, normally prop up the shelves of a piece of furniture or else the jutting parts of buildings. Pierre Chapo decided not to take this universal law into account and modeled a support that fits into the upright, which means the shelf can be solidly fixed under its support. In a balance between gravity and the forces at play, the more weight goes on the shelf, the better its components slot into the upright. Literature: Magen H Gallery, "Pierre Chapo: A Modern Craftsman", Mgen H Gallery Edition (New York: 2017), pp. 98 - 101 Pierre Chapo Born into a family of craftsmen, Pierre Chapo received his architectural training at l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After graduating in 1958, he established his first studio in Clamart, France and subsequently opened la Galerie Chapo in Paris. In addition to featuring his own work, the gallery exhibited decorative objects, ceramics, lighting and Scandinavian design. He found inspiration in the work of Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Bauhaus, Charlotte Perriand in addition to his extensive travels throughout Europe and the United States. Pierre Chapo was a master wood craftsman which is reflected in his seminal works.
