Gothic Revival Style
The Gothic Revival movement (also called Victorian Gothic or Neo-Gothic) emerged in Britain in the 1740s, and reached its height in the late-19th century. Gothic Revival furniture's characteristics include such decorative flourishes as pointed arches, floral details, finials, heraldic motifs and linenfold carving.
The movement was rooted in religious and social conservatism. Gothic Revival's proponents, who included Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin, the architects of London’s Houses of Parliament (designed in 1840), believed that the art and architecture of the Middle Ages were authentically spiritual and inherently moral.
In the United States, the Gothic Revival movement shaped both public buildings and private houses. Numerous American schools were built in the early-19th century in a style now called Collegiate Gothic. Many builders and craftsmen were inspired by Andrew Jackson Downing’s widely read 1850 book Architecture for Country Houses, which posited that a family’s home should exemplify their values — and that the Gothic Revival style was particularly well-suited to scholars and clergymen. Furniture with detailing that mirrored that of Gothic Revival buildings appeared in the same period. Such pieces typically feature dark, intricately carved wood, and upholstery in velvet or leather.
Much like the castles or cathedrals that inspired them, Gothic Revival chairs, bookcases and beds make a bold design statement. And while you probably don’t have to cross a moat or raise a portcullis to get through your front door, a Gothic Revival piece will declare that your home is indeed your castle.

Although no specific pieces of Gothic furniture documented as by Duncan Phyfe have come to light, there is considerable evidence that he, like various of his contemporaries in New York, embraced the Gothic style. This is an exceptional Gothic-Revival bookcase dating from the mid-19th century. In three horizontal sections, cornice, upper glazed bookcase and lower cupboard. The upper glazed bookcase in two parts, a right hand side double bookcase and left hand side single.
The detachable cornice with an ogee moulding above a deep frieze.
The bookcase divided into three sections, each with six panels with original glazing and gothic arches at the top. The interior with numerous fittings for shelves. The doors with original escutcheons, locks and a replaced steel key that operates all the upper bookcase locks.
The cupboard section with a 3cm thick top and divided into three sections. The oak doors have beautiful and profuse medullary ray figuring resembling a burr which the cabinet maker has selected to match and Gothic motifs in each corner and at the top of the interposed moulded panels. The interior divided into three enclosed sections each fitted with a single shelf. Original escutcheons, locks and replaced steel key operating all the cupboard base locks.

A very good looking and well-made piece, this is pretty much the finest quality example of this type of furniture you will ever see, it is super decorative, hand carved to the middle panels, the form is Gothic Revival, each section has a church spire look and feel to it, it is a museum quality piece that commands attention in any setting
We have cleaned waxed and polished it, it is in perfect period condition throughout, the only point to note is I don't have any keys for the locks

COMPANY HISTORY
The firm of Holland & Sons (1803–1942) became from 1843 one of the largest and most successful cabinet makers, and a rival to Gillows of Lancaster and London. The company's labelled Day books are now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum Archive of Art and Design where they present a virtual 'who's who' of nineteenth century society.
Established in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland (architect). Always on the leading edge of fashion, Holland & Sons employed some of England's foremost designers and participated in all of the International Exhibitions of 1851, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1872 and 1878. Holland and Sons also participated in many of the leading international exhibitions including London in 1862, Vienna in 1873 and Paris in 1867 and 1872. After a brief period in which the company was known as Taprell, Holland & Son c.1835-43, William Holland gained sole command after the senior partner Taprell's retirement. From 1843 onwards they were known as Holland and Sons.
The relationship between builder and cabinet maker is similar to another leading Victorian firm, Trollope and Sons. Their earliest known commission was to furnish the Athenaeum Club, London, 1824- 1838. They also worked alongside the prestigious firm of Thomas Dowbiggin at Osborne House, and eventually took over their premises and business at 23 Mount Street, London in 1851 and 1853 respectively.
In 1851, when the company was based in Mount Street and employed 351 people, they won a prize at the Great Exhibition for a bookcase. By then, after being granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment (United Kingdom) early in the reign of Queen Victoria, they had already taken a leading part in the decoration and furnishing of Osborne House, Sandringham House, Balmoral Castle, Windsor Castle and the apartments of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House...

Where to begin, this desk has been on a journey, when I first received the piece it looked like it had been French polished and waxed around 20 times, it had a very clumpy sticky finish, my restorers have stripped back all that horrible guck, they have then lightly stained and French polished it the correct way which has kept all the period patina and simply made it golden, The leather top and writing slope top has been replaced with fully aniline natural cattle hide leather that was plain, I’ve then had my leather polishers dye it this gorgeous whisky brown colour. Gothic Revival oak credence cupboard, 19th century, canted case, carved with tracery and foliates throughout, having two small top cabinets, over central cabinet, open medial shelf, linenfold sides, rising on bracket feet, approximately 66.5" height, 49.5" width, 22" depth.
