18th Century Lyonnaise Armoire in Carved Walnut Wood

About the Item

This fantastic walnut wood armoire was hand-carved in Lyon (southeast France) in the 1700’s. 18th century armoires from Lyon are quite distinct, thanks to techniques used by ebenistes to make their furniture standout from other woodworkers throughout the country. While armoires from the region were rectilinear in shape, crowns were typically arched with highly carved pediments. Notice how our armoire has a gorgeous cartouche featuring a gadrooned and curled leaf flanked by a horizontal margent of gadrooned leaves that transition into flowers. This ornamentation was very much influenced by the rococo stylings that were prevalent at the time. Three iron hinges support each of the high arching doors. Like the crown, the doors feature rococo relief cartouches depicting scalloped and curled leaves that sit on heads of two volute scrolls. The scrolls are part of the molding that forms the upper panel of each door. There are two more panels below, each with their own impressive moldings. The doors are a definitively Lyonnaise: abundantly molded with three panels that are marked by movement and life. Interestingly, locks and keyplates of Lyon armoires were almost always adjacent to a concave or triangular section of molding, just as ours is. Two full-length shelves divide the interior, with one positioned near the top and the other in the middle. The lower shelf is unique in that three pullout drawers are built into the 6 ½ inch thick ledge. The armoire has a highly stepped linear base with four block feet beneath. The beautiful design, as well as the use of “flame” walnut wood (see photos of the door panels), makes this 18th century Lyonnaise armoire a statement piece. It can be used in any bedroom or living room.

Repaired: Small old repairs likely and completely normal. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Good condition. Wear commensurate to age and use with minor rubs and separations. Fleabites and traces of old worm. Buildup to interior and remnants of old paper lining the back wall. One key works the functioning lock on each of the three drawers.

Early 18th Century Walnut and Olive Wood Armoire from Eastern France

This unique armoire from the early 1700’s was made from walnut and olive wood and features a plinth base with central cherub mascaron along the crown. At just under 86 inches tall and 78 wide at the crown, this armoire has a more manageable size, compared to many of the very large armoires of the same period. The unique construction allows it to be easily disassembled for transport. At one point, this walnut and olive wood armoire was the property of a chocoladefabriek (chocolate factory) in Strasbourg, located in the region of Alsace, near the German border. It was originally one armoire in a pair that were commissioned in Eastern France in the early 1700s. The ebeniste who created the armoire decided to use olive wood for the door panels and some of the side panels. Olive wood was a highly valued wood among wood workers of the 18th century because of its pretty color and the richness and nuances of its veining. In the center of the crown is a foliate and floral ring surrounding a cherub mascaron. The crown and the top of the door frames have both been carved in an arch, mirroring the shape of the door moldings. Each door is mounted on iron hinges and separated by recessed molding into three uniquely shaped panels of olive wood (the rest of the armoire is constructed with walnut). Both upper panels of the doors are adorned with a series of undulating C-scrolls, while the bottom panels are rectangles with concave tops. The two sections are separated by a simple ovate center panel. Armoires date back the 17th century when French menuisiers created the storage cabinet to house clothing. Unusual 18th Century Venetian Center Piece in Carved Walnut Wood, Circa 1780

Located in Dallas, TX

Although the Rococo in France (where the style originated) lasted from roughly 1725 to 1760, other countries in Europe produced period art and furniture until the late 18th century. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet.
