About the Item

Very handsome wardrobe by Meredew Furniture manufacturers. Part of the tola bedroom furniture and Meredew Design 1962 line attributed to Alphons Loebenstein. It is in great vintage condition. See long description for details. This wonderful wardrobe is an absolutely fabulous piece of Mid-Century Modern English furniture! It is part of the tola bedroom furniture line and Meredew design 1962 by Meredew furniture manufacturers which were based in letchworth England for over 75 years. This line is attributed to Alphons Loebenstein. Alphons was the first staff designer for Meredew and was hired after the war. He was 57 at the time, a German emigree, and his ideas revolutionized Meredew as he persuaded them to abandon Traditional Design and embrace modern unit furniture. A handsome piece of midcentury Furniture this wardrobe is smaller than most wardrobes but still consists of double opening doors which close against a seven-inch wide centre support and the complete cabinet is raised off the floor by four slender tapered legs. There are some age cracks or crazing to the finish of the left door and the logo tag is missing inside; but, otherwise it is in wonderful age appropriate condition. And speaking of the inside, it is a beautiful as the outside and has a single hanging rod. We do have two other pieces from this set listed, a lovely vanity and a wonderful chest of drawers. This line was produced in a range of woods including: natural oak, natural oak with sycamore, walnut, meremat, merepol walnut, and merepol Canadian elm. We feel this is one of the walnuts but can't be sure which. We can be sure it is an awesome piece of Mid-Century Modern English furniture and would look wonderful wherever you decide to use it. Measures: Height 73 inches, Width 47.5 inches, Depth 22.5 inches. Weight 140.4 pounds.
