Queen Anne Furniture

QUEEN ANNE STYLE

Although named for the last Stuart monarch of England, antique Queen Anne furniture, with its curvy cabriole legs and pad feet, has its origins in the earlier reign of King William III, which began in 1689 and ended with his death in 1702. Later evolving during Anne’s rule from 1702–14, the style would continue to influence design in the decades after her death.

Sometimes called late Baroque or early Georgian, Queen Anne chairs, bedroom furniture and tables are subdued yet ornate and characterized by a graceful blend of influences ranging from Asian design to classical motifs. Furnishings of this era — with their curvilinear supports and novel emphasis on comfort and versatility — are marked by a shift away from the more opulent and angular William and Mary style.

Chairs designed in the Queen Anne style are more functional and lightweight than their predecessors. They often feature a vase or fiddle-shaped splat, which refers to the central vertical back element, in order to support the spine and plush cushions. Craftsmen of the era predominantly worked in walnut, maple and pine. Any embellishments they introduced in their furnishings were frequently minimal and refined and expressed by way of modest flourishes such as shells or scrolls. Some pieces were more lavish with “japanned” finishes, or varnished interpretations of East Asian lacquer art. Almost every piece of furniture, whether a tea table or desk, included S-shaped, animalistic cabriole legs that end in a paw or claw-and-ball form.

These qualities made Queen Anne furniture popular throughout Europe and North America. Boston and Philadelphia became hubs for the production of this style of furniture, spurred by the arrival of British artisans who fostered a market for well-heeled colonists. While the showier Chippendale style later surpassed it in popularity, Queen Anne’s simple elegance still draws an enduring appreciation.

Very Rare Carved Gilt Gesso Dressing Mirror, circa 1710-1720
Located in Lymington, GB
A very rare carved gilt gesso dressing mirror. Queen Anne / George I-period, ca 1710-20. Decorated all over with the original finely carved gilt-gesso surfaces with typical circular punched reserves. The hinged fall - of what one might refer to as the 'table bureau' section - reveals a shaped, fitted interior, gilded and japanned (''lacquered'') in black with red. Some external carved surfaces show very minor areas of wear revealing the authentic bole and gesso ground. Overall in superb condition. H: 39 1/2’’ (100 cm) D: 12 1/2’’ (31.5 cm) W: 17 3/4’’ (45.5 cm). Reminiscent of the work of London-based James Moore (ca 1670-1726), a supreme exponent of the art of cut gesso and gilding. This dressing table mirror is possibly unique in this form, and as such has survived some 310 years in remarkably original state. It may have been part of a suite of furniture, would have been extremely costly, and very much the reserve of the aristocracy and wealthy in the early part of the 18th century. For documented pieces by James Moore visit the Royal Collection Trust. Wikipedia: James Moore (furniture designer). James Moore (circa 1670 - October 1726) was established at Short's Gardens, St. Giles-in-the-Fields. He was in partnership with John Gumley from 1714 and, unlike his partner, did not advertise - the sole published reference to him being a notice of his death in The Weekly Journal or The British Gazetteer. As Royal cabinet-maker he supplied walnut and mahogany furniture for the Royal Household, the Royal Yacht, and the King's servants and mistresses, as well as the rich gilt-gesso work for which he is best known. Moore is especially renowned for gilt-gesso furniture: tables; looking glass frames; and candle stands. A pair of gilt-gesso side tables bearing the crowned cypher of George I in The Royal Collection, and the pair of candle stands en-suite are incised with his name - an unusual practice at the time. At Erddig, such furniture by Moore can be linked to surviving bills and receipts from James Moore and John Belchier, 1722-26. Gilt-gesso furniture is also encountered in fine Louis XIV and other European furniture of the period. Literature: Ralph Edwards CBE FSA 'The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture', Hamlyn, London (Fourth Impression 1972) ill. 5, p. 363. One of a pair of looking glasses by James Moore, 1720. Erddig, Denbigh. The crest is reminiscent of that upon our dressing mirror, which we are offering here. Kreisel, Heinrich, 'Die Kunst Des Deutschen Mobels', CH Beck, Munchen (1970) ill. 345, p. 347 - note similarities in the treatment of the top of the crest. This mirror was last seen in the collection of Augsburg Castle. Synge, Lanto, 'Great English Furniture', London (1991) p. 52. Symonds, R. W., 'A Royal Scrutoire', Connoisseur (June 1940) pp. 233-236. Queen Anne Style Pedestal Desk
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting an absolutely gorgeous Queen Anne Style pedestal desk. Made of walnut, butterflied walnut, burl walnut and oyster wood, the veneers on this piece are STUNNING ! Made in England at the end of the 19th Century (circa 1890) this is a stunning replica of an original Queen Anne piece from the late 17th/early 18th Century ! The attention to detail is outstanding from the use of the correct period veneers, right down to the banding and parquetry inlays, to the hardware. It is a diminutive desk as it should be as desk from the Queen Anne period were much, much smaller than desks made today due to the fact that in the 17/18th Century people were much smaller. It consists of 2 pedestals with 2 drawers on each pedestal facing to the front, and 2 doors that open to a single shelf on the other side. The removeable top has 3 working drawers to the front only. It has a fabulous distressed and aged brown leather insert on the top in an oval/floret shape. It sits on 4 curved padded feet. Not marked but obviously made by a top, top maker ! This desk was acquired and owned by a Mr. Jim Quist a well known businessman and high society character in Dallas, who resided at Swiss Ave., Dallas until his death in 2020. Provenance: From the Quist Estate in Dallas Condition: Very good original condition. The 2 teardrop pulls on the front center drawer are later replacements but compliment the period and style. Some very minor veneer repairs, professionally touched up. No keys. Dimensions: 29 inches tall, 54 inches wide and 33 inches deep. Kneehole Clearance 23.5 inches tall and 18.5 inches wide. Anne (6 February 1665 – 1 August 1714) was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland between 8 March 1702 and 1 May 1707. On 1 May 1707, under the Acts of Union, the kingdoms of England and Scotland united as a single sovereign state known as Great Britain. She continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1714. Anne was born in the reign of Charles II to his younger brother and heir presumptive, James, whose suspected Roman Catholicism was unpopular in England. On Charles’s instructions, Anne and her elder sister, Mary, were raised as Anglicans. Mary married their Dutch Protestant cousin, William III of Orange...
