About the Item

An oval brass bar cart/tea trolley from the 1940’s and possibly late 1930’s attributed to barware and furniture manufacturer Maxwell Phillips of New York. It has 2 tiers with each having a double-ribboned guardrail and a glass shelf. The cart sits on four rotating hard-rubber caster wheels for easy mobility. The handle is made from brass and, we believe, black bakelite. While there are similar bar carts on the market, this one distinguishes itself from the others in its construction, namely, the brass joinery plates (upside down triangles) by which the guardrail is attached to the four main pillars. In addition, they also add to the overall aesthetic design of the cart. In other carts, this important architectural element is missing. This produces better structural stability in the cart. The other feature is, of course, the bakelite handle, which sets this unique cart apart from other carts. While there are no visible structural defects or issues, the cart, in our opinion, needs a good cleaning and polish. DIMENSIONS: Width (longer side): 29.75 in. (75.5 cm.) Depth (shorter side): 18 in. (45.7 cm.) Height to top of upper guardrail: 28 in. (71.1 cm.) Height to top of lower guardrail: 10.5 in. (26.7 cm.) Height to top of handle bar: 29.5 in. (74.9 cm.)
