About the Item

American shaped tilt-top candle stand. The shaped top is hinged to a block on a pedestal centering on a reeded urn form supported by an arched tripod base. The legs have stop reeded leg caps and terminate in spade feet. Mahogany with American cherry top. This piece is attributed to John Meads based on its distinctive quality and Albany cabinetmaking characteristics, which drew style elements from both New York City and Boston. This uniquely regional variation was executed with a mastery of detail placing this piece as the product of an important Albany NY cabinet shop. The attribution was suggested by the Albany Institute. Meads was born 1777, immigrated to New York in 1792, and worked as apprentice to English Master Cabinet maker, Samuel Miller. Following the completion of his apprenticeship he relocated to Albany in 1802, died 1859. American, circa 1805-10.
