Fine and Rare George II Mahogany Galleried Octagonal Table

This fine, larger than usual, George ll-period table has a baluster-galleried octagonal top supported on a birdcage, allowing the top to both swivel and tilt. Note the fine, tapering, fluted column continuing into a carved collar. The well-drawn cabriole tripod base is foliate-carved at the knees and toes. Of lovely old colour and patina throughout and in original condition. The spindle gallery has a rare and original feature of elegant brass 'spacers' with slightly protruding brass studs. Note the one piece, beautifully-figured top. Vis. A similar tripod table from the Percival Griffiths Collection is illustrated in R.W. Symonds 'English Furniture from Charles ll to George ll' (1929) fig. 152. Another was sold from the Frederick Howard Reed Collection by Christies on 16th November 1955. 18th Century, Italian inlaid wood center table. This refined centre table, finished on all four sides, was made in Italy in the 18th century, in veneered and inlaid wood with various wood essences, including bois de rose, rosewood, boxwood and green wood. The quadrangular top has a very refined inlay with large circular reserve inscribed in a square, flower-shaped inlays on the sides and in rounds, geometric designs in greek and ribbon. The color game that is created with the different colors of the woods used is of great decorative effect and very refined. The perimeter of the top has a small raised edge, entirely paved head, which makes the objects resting on top of the floor do not slip away. The four legs, moved and arched end with sabot in gilded bronze chiseled with phytomorphic motifs. Extremely versatile and decorative, the table can be placed in any environment, both in the center of a room and next to a wall. It easily communicates with antique and modern furniture.

A very fine quality 18th century Georgian Sheraton period satinwood pembroke table having superbly figured two flap top, with attractive padouk wood crossbanded decoration, over one frieze drawer opposed by dummy drawer to reverse, retaining original brass handles, raised on elegant square tapering legs, terminating on original brass castors. Pembroke tables became one of the most popular pieces of furniture around the middle of the 18th century, owing largely to their versatility and their plethora of different functions. In fact George Hepplewhite himself actually described Pembroke tables as "the most useful of tables" and many references can be found to them in the literature of the time. People such as Jane Austen even described them being used for dining at, or for writing at, whilst there is even reference to them being used in other places around the house such as for ladies to sit and and carry out their embroidery. One thing that is certain is that the fact they are incredibly versatile even in todays world and can be used for many, many different purposes. Antique and Vintage Center Tables

An alluring sitting area doesn’t have to be in the exact center of the room, but an antique or vintage center table is a great tool to partition off such an area.

By definition, a center table is a piece of furniture that is placed in the center of a room. Initially these appeared in the foyer or entryway before making their way into the living room. While one might keep seating furniture such as sofas against the walls to avoid limiting movement and closing off space, a center table in the living room can fill this central space without restricting the flow of the room.

One of the purposes of a center table is to anchor the rest of the furniture. It draws the eye to a specific area and invites guests to sit down. When thinking about how you’ll arrange your furniture, a good rule of thumb is to set tables an arm’s length away from seating. For instance, place a coffee table about 18 inches from a sofa so that it is within reach but not too close. In more modern layouts, tables are sometimes placed to the side to leave a large open area for foot traffic.

Because of its central position, a center table is one of the first things people will notice when entering a room. It’s important to consider how a center table can add to a room, as it’s a crucial element for defining the feel and theme of a room. Some center tables are mainly for decor, while others can be a great place to sit around over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Center tables are perfect for displaying decorative objects, floral arrangements, books or a cluster of prized antique vases given the prominent position of your table and the attention it will get.

The clean lines and organic forms that we typically associate with mid-century modern center tables means that they will bring a dose of sophistication to a space, and examples from the era can be found in square and round shapes. Wood tables were popular with furniture makers of the period, but versions in glass and marble are also widely available. Because Art Deco designers frequently incorporated ornamental embellishments such as exotic animal hides and veneers in their seating, case pieces and other furniture, your Art Deco center table will likely make a strong statement in any room. Alternatively, if you’re searching for something small and unassuming, Regency tables could be an option for your space.
