An Exceptional French Empire Period Mahogany Pedestal / Centre Table, Circa 1815
About the Item
The original fossilized black marble circular top over a conforming frieze of richly figured crotch mahogany, mounted upon a stunning flame-mahogany tri-corner base accented with three individual hand carved & applied swan-shaped elements, raised overall on three columnar supports on compressed pad feet.
The top having a later repaired separation which remains very stable.
(Note: In order to better illustrate the superior figuring of the mahogany of this fine table, the lighting source has rendered a somewhat warmer hue in the primary image, as opposed to the darker tone observed in the subsequent images).
IMPORTANT NOTE: For all interested U.S. & Overseas clients, we are currently in the process of establishing a means to expedite the process of obtaining the necessary CITES export permit required to ship items constructed of mahogany - whether in part or in whole, to both United States & overseas clients. That being said, at this point it may take upwards of several weeks or possibly months to obtain the necessary CITES Export permit.

- Condition:Repaired: The fossilized marble top having a later repaired separation but remains in very stable condition. The base does not appear to have had any repairs, and shows a fine re-polished old 'French' polished finish. Wear consistent with age and use.

All six frames featuring swan shaped brass inlaid motifs strikingly silhouetted against ebonized panels within brass moldings, over hand carved lyre-shaped splats replete with brass 'strings'. The frames also featuring brass strung stiles, front seat rails & sabre-leg front supports. All are in exceptionally sound condition due to the classical construction method of using oak as the secondary wood for added strength & durability.
The swan motif was highly favored by cabinetmakers & mount makers during the Directoire Period and was associated with Napoleons consort Josephine, by interpreting her protective nature towards her children like that of a swan towards it's cygnets).

A Finely Carved Early 19th Century French Empire Mahogany Centre Table with Ormolu Mounts.
This fine centre table is constructed in rich coloured mahogany with good surface and patination. The top of the table is a grey and white veined piece of marble with a deep moulded edge. The tripartite platform base has incurved triangular sides with flattened bun feet and castors. Above the base moulding is a tapering pedestal with fine quality ormolu mounts with original gilding attached to the centre of each side, illustrating flaming classical torches. Each corner of the base has a carved ram's head and carved foliate detailing.
A nice piece of Empire period furniture.
