Italian Late 16th Century Renaissance Walnut Center or Library Table

About the Item

Extraordinary, large Italian Renaissance table of strong, linear design. The thick 2-plank top with a narrow dentil edge, above a frieze containing three drawers, supported by massive square legs joined by conforming, low box-stretchers. The strong architectural lines of this table, featuring just a few minimal decorative elements, like the triangular shaped accents on the legs, the corbels at the top of the legs and the simply paneled drawer fronts, (simulated on the backside), give this table a timeless contemporary character that blends effortlessly into contemporary interiors and a mix of styles. The table has a warm beautifully light color and patina and a wonderful smooth feel of age, with all the subtle unevenness and beautifully done repairs that happened over the ca. 400+ years of its life. Similar tables are illustrated in various publications of early Italian Furniture, including two examples in the famous Davanzati Palace / Elia Volpi sale in 1916, New York.
