1959 Brazilian Modern “Romana” Coffee Table by Jorge Zalszupin

About the Item

Available today, this “Romana” coffee table, designed by Jorge Zalsziupin in 1959, is nothing less than spectacular. The Romana coffee table is a stunning example of minimalist design. Its use of materials - including curved rosewood legs and a travertine slab supported by four brass fixtures - creates a sense of weightlessness that defies traditional notions of heaviness and lightness. The legs have been expertly refinished and are in excellent condition. This stunning coffee table is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of L'Atelier, as evidenced by the stamped numbers on the legs, and would make a fantastic addition to any home decor. The “Romana” coffee table is showcased in our showroom with a black leather sofa from Jorge Zalszupin and a side table set from Celina Decoracoes, and the combo is nothing less than fantastic. Jorge Zalszupin (1922-2020) was born in Warsaw, Poland and studied architecture at Bucharest’s Ecole des Beaux Arts. While working as an architect in Paris, he found inspiration about Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx and immigrated to Brazil. His work as an architect created a demand for decoration and furniture proposals that suited the style of his projects. Eventually in November of 1959, he established his own company called L'Atelier. He excelled in working with various materials, such as travertine marble, slung leather, and exquisite woods like jacaranda and rosewood. Zalszupin's contribution to Brazilian modernism lies in his consistently sleek and elegant creations, utilizing the vibrant grains of tropical hardwoods abundant in the region.
