A 1970's wave design glass and steel coffee table attrib to Maria Pergay

About the Item

A spectacular European avant-garde iron and glass wave coffee table attributed to : Maria Pergay circa 1970. Playful and energetic, this abstract cocktail table design features a sinuous shape that forms an undulating base which rests on a flat sheet of steel with curled ends and held by short tubular columns. New glass top BIO: Maria Pergay (1930- 2023) rightfully belongs among the 20th-century design greats, standing alongside luminaries such as Eero Aarnio, Verner Panton, and Charlotte Perriand. Her innovative approach to furniture design, particularly her groundbreaking work with steel, positioned her at the forefront of the European avant-gard. Pergay's creations forged a new luxury aesthetic characterized by strong lines, hard surfaces, and a unique interplay of light, all achieved through her masterful use of steel. Pergay's journey to becoming a design icon began with her studies at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques in Paris, complemented by sculpture classes with Russian artist Ossip Zadkine at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. After a brief stint in the United States, she returned to Paris and established her shop on the prestigious Place des Vosges. Her theatrical interiors quickly caught the eye of post-war fashion luminaries, including Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Hubert de Givenchy, who commissioned her to create luxury items for their brands. This recognition in the fashion world set the stage for her future success in furniture design. The turning point in Pergay's career came in the late 1950s when Uginox, a French steel company, approached her to create gifts for their clients using steel. This opportunity led to her groundbreaking work with stainless steel, which would become her signature material and revolutionize French interior design in the 1970s Pergay's contributions to design were officially recognized in 2012 when the French government appointed her Chevalier de l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, cementing her status as a pivotal figure in 20th-century design. Weighs approximately 65 lbs Abstract, Industrial, Minimalist, Post Modern, Contemporary, Iconic Design, 1960's .
