About the Item

Antique Eagle Mosaic Coffee Table Creation Date: 5th - 7th century (mosaic), mounted as a table in the 20th century Period: Late Roman or Byzantine era (mosaic) Materials: Ceramic and mosaic (marble and stone tesserae) Dimensions: 105 x 122 x 46 cm Weight: Approximately 150 kg This exceptional antique coffee table features an eagle mosaic motif, crafted from marble and stone tesserae. Dating from the Late Roman or Byzantine period (5th - 7th century), the mosaic was turned into a coffee table in the '80s, transforming a historical artifact into a refined and relevant decorative piece. In remarkable condition for its age, this mosaic retains much of its original decorative motifs and the vibrant coloration of its tesserae. It is mounted on a concrete backing and framed, ensuring its stability and preservation. Historical and Contextual Background: Mosaics from the Late Roman Empire and Byzantine period were crafted to adorn the floors and walls of villas, basilicas, and palaces, often depicting mythological, animal, or religious scenes. The eagle, a central motif in this piece, was a symbol of power, empire, and divinity, frequently associated with imperial Roman and Christian iconography.
