"Biplano" Coffee Table by Bruno Munari for Robots, Milan, 1972
About the Item
This iconic "Biplano" coffee table, designed by Bruno Munari for Robots in Milan, 1972, is a perfect example of minimalist and forward-thinking design. The black lacquered tubular metal structure sits on swivel wheels, supporting two sleek black smoked glass shelves.
What sets this table apart is its innovative design: by removing the glass shelves, the structure can be folded down, making it easy to store and occupying minimal space. This practical feature adds to its timeless elegance, making it both functional and space-efficient.
With its clean lines and functional aesthetic, the "Biplano" coffee table exemplifies Munari’s pioneering approach to Italian design in the 1970s. A true classic, this piece continues to reflect the cutting-edge style of the era, well ahead of its time.

Bruno Munari
In his prolific career, Bruno Munari was known for various contributions to art, industrial design, film, architecture, art theory, and technology. Munari’s principles and beliefs were built upon his early involvement in the Futurist movement, which he joined at the age of 19 using the pseudonym “Bum.” During the 1930s, Munari began to move towards Constructivism, particularly with his kinetic sculptures, Useless Machines (begun 1933), meant to transform or complicate their surrounding environments. Throughout his career, Munari was captivated by both a sense of whimsy and the manipulation of artificial light. After World War II, Munari also developed radical innovation in graphics, typography, and book publishing, through the latter creating pieces he would call Useless Books.
