About the Item

Emile Galle (1846-1904) Three-Tiered Table Circa 1900 This three tiered, four legged French walnut table with "Libellules," or "Dragonflies," fruitwood marquetry decoration, by Émile Gallé, is a wonderful example of the Art Nouveau beauty and genius. The curved and cupped legs and trey design show exquisite detail allowing for simplicity at the same time. The base material is oak wood along with many fruitwood as well as exotic veneers from Africa and South America. Abstract organic botanical designs with a spectacular dragon fly on top tier. Signed 'Galle' to top in veneer. Height 34in (86.5cm) Width 28in (71cm) Depth 18 3/4in (47.5cm) Condition: Very good, wear commensurate of age and use. stable, strong with very light cleaning. Veneer is all there and original. Besides some visible glue; there is no sign of damage or restoration. The work of Émile Gallé was what first attracted me to marquetry. Gallé (1846-1904) is best known as a designer of art glass. However, he also ran a furniture factory in the city of Nancy that specialized in marquetry. Gallé’s business employed hundreds of people. There was production work that can still be found in auction houses and antiques stores. They also did some very fine “one off” furniture pieces. While there are other examples of this three tiered table; they are all unique in their artisan of marquetry all being hand made with meticulously cut veneer to breathe a so called jig saw or art only seen in the imagination of Galle and his artisans.
