Aluminum Concretion Coffee Table by Studio Julien Manaira
Located in Geneve, CH
Aluminum concretion coffee table by Studio Julien Manaira Dimensions: 65 x 65 x 40 cm Materials: Aluminium and stainless steel The concretion project consists of sand-casting aluminium in a base of stainless steel tubes to form objects. The tubes are placed and cut to certain heights according to what the gross object’s dimensions will be. The shapes of each horizontal surface are then prepared by hand without following any precise plan. Each pouring of aluminium is at the same time forming surfaces of the object as well as connecting elements together. The aim of this process is to create a strong relation between two types of metal: the industrial stainless steel and the brut hand-cast aluminium, that comes visually as an extension of the first one. The two types of metal have two opposite relation to time, the industrial tube can’t be placed in time, only resulting from a continuous chain of production when the hand-cast part captures the very moment of formation of the object. This opposition is not meant to compare which materiality is best, but to enrich each other by their difference, and therefore stimulate the Julien Manaira (France, 1992) successively studied industrial design (La martinière, Lyon) and fine arts -option product design (Esad, Reims). in 2015 he came to Amsterdam to follow a temporary master program (Materialisation in Art and Design) at the Sandberg Institute where he graduated in 2017 before opening his studio in the same city. His graduation project ‘The once liquid plastic’ was awarded by the RADO Star Prize 2017 and the 3rd prize of the Pure Talent Contest at IMM Cologne 2018. In the last years, he exhibited his works in different established and recognized organizations such as Paris Design Week, IMM Cologne, Design Parade Hyères, and Milan Design Week. He was commissioned by different companies, among which Nilufar Gallery, Nubikk, Van Dijk Store as well as private clients. The main focus in his practice is setting processes that allow the manufacturer or him to be mentally and physically involved in the transformation of material towards an object. He believes that this empowerment is a way to engage deeper the audience or user’s perception, and therefore create a stronger connection with the object. Serendipity, combining industrial and artisanal material, are examples of how he aims to create objects that are able to communicate their undergone transformations. Iris Box...

Peter Ghyczy Glass Coffee Table with Stainless Steel Frame Biri T29
By Peter Ghyczy
Located in Oirlo, LI
This beautiful coffee table was designed by the Hungarian designer Peter Ghyczy in the 1980s. The table consists of a 30 mm thick glass plate that rests on a stainless steel frame. This frame is made of a continuous square tube of 4 x 4 cm. Both the legs and the resting points on which the table top rests are decorated with gold-coloured details. The resting points are depicted as little monks holding up the table top. The model of the table is T29 and comes from the Biri series, named after Ghyczy's nanny. The entire Biri series stands for sturdy yet graceful design, based on simple geometric shapes. Peter Ghyczy's work as a designer. Peter Ghyczy is one of several designers in the 20th century who were also immigrants – among them Henry van de Velde, Marcel Breuer, Hans Gugelot, Peter Maly – and had a major impact on German and international design. In 1968 he took a leading position at the company Elastogran in Lemförde in southern Lower Saxony, where he was responsible for the development of products made from polyurethane. Owner of the company Gottfried Reuter, former chemist at Bayer in Leverkusen, was an expert in the field of polyurethane production, for which he held several patents. In the 1960s he formed a company group (with a turnover of a few hundred million Deutschmarks based on these patents). Between 1968 and 1972 Peter Ghyczy developed many innovative designs, which identified him as one of the most productive designers of these years. In 1970 the Design-Center in Lemförde was inaugurated, built according to Ghyczy's design, made completely from polyurethane and being the first of its kind. It was one of the early German design studios, whose close cooperation between product design and technical development was unheard of in the plastics industry until then. This design studio gave birth to many novel, modular components, such as shelters, facade elements...

Bits of Wood Coffee Table by Pepe Heykoop
By Pepe Heykoop
Located in Amsterdam, NL
The local sawmill produces lots of waste wood. Adorable bits and beautiful types but all different in size. That makes them hard to use for a regular production. The common thought is to sell it as firewood. Tin is a type of metal that melts at a relatively low melting point of 232 degrees Celsius. Once it has molten it is just liquid enough to flow around the bits of wood, filling up the gaps. Its temperature is just not hot enough to burn the hardwood resulting in metal that flows around the hardwood and solidifies in cloud like shapes. Not any glue or screws are used keeping the wood together. Only a combination of leftover hardwood and old tin pots and plates were molten into in a collection of stools, tables and coffee tables. Year - 2012 Material - leftover hard wood, recycled tin...
