A Pair of Pine Benches, Bernt Petersen, Denmark

A pair of pine benches designed by Danish designer, Bernt Petersen, in the 1960s. Low enough to be used as coffee tables or as occasional seating, the simple construction of this pair of benches is enhanced by the linear striations of the pine from which they are constructed. The feet and ends of these benches are neatly rounded, adding further softness to the design.

A low bench or coffee table made in Denmark during the 1950s or early 1960s. Classically modernist, the charm of this low bench lies in its construction. The top is comprised of cane which is tightly woven around the teak frame. The cane-work pattern is looser in areas, then contracts in order to create a striped pattern in these denser parts. The base of the bench is fully teak, and formed from a simple cross and bar construction which holds the cane clad frame.
