About the Item

Offered is this beautiful coffee table. Bold & strong this table signed by the sculptor Paul Kingma is an early and solid example of his passion for creating unique pieces influenced by the Brutalist style of the period. As early as the 1970s Dutch artist Paul Kingma designed furniture incorporating natural elements of the Earth in a Brutalist but beautiful way. In the 1980s, Kingma incorporated other materials in relief like fossils, pebbles, copper and brass. Kingma once quoted "my stone tables resist the corruption of time, and support the weight of life". Kingma’s concept, nicely demonstrated in this piece, considers the table as an sculpture where the artist plays with the different materials. In Kingma’s words "a self-contained design that can be used as a table afterwards." At the focal point of this example, there is an beautiful top. This is made up of geometric slate pieces with a dark grey tone, diagonal brass bands, brass rings and vintage coins. This mosaic has exposed dark grout adding to the decorative design. The edges of the table are rounded. The base is plywood with a textured coating like the slate on the top. The table top can be unscrewed from the base if needed. The table is in very good vintage condition. The top slate finish is in good used condition with no marks or dents. The brass details have some vintage patina in line with age. The base is in good condition with minor wear in line with age.
