About the Item

MODERNIST GOLD-LEAF METAL AND GLASS COCKTAIL TABLE Designed by Paul M. Jones Unmarked 45" W x 24" D x 17" H A rectangular cocktail table designed by Paul M. Jones, the gold-leaf overlaid metal frame has distinctive Neoclassical lines with bold tapering squared legs and a stretcher of stylized interlocking form beneath tapering legs. The thick inset glass top is surrounded by a stepped rim. Of remarkable quality - all solid iron elements, beautifully finished and built to last the test of time. Paul M. Jones was an American designer active in the mid twentieth century, best known for his use of gold and silver leaf applied to metal furniture frames. His work combined neoclassical and modernist influences, often featuring spare but elegant silhouettes enhanced with luminous surfaces. Jones’ tables, consoles, and lighting were distributed through decorators and retailers during the 1950s and 1960s and are recognized today for their distinctive decorative finishes. An example of the table in a slightly different size was offered at Christie's, New York in October of 2019 where it achieved $ 4,750 USD (Live Auction 18793 The Collector: Property from Four American Collections, lot 639). The table remains a current production by the design firm of John Boone, protege of Paul M. Jones. Condition: Rubbing and wear to gold leaf throughout the frame. Tiny chip to underside edge of the glass along with minor age-related rubbing and wear to the glass. We can always have a brand new piece of glass fabricated for the table - contact for a quote. ref. 508GKP20M About silla antiques & art Established in 2009, we have available in our 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery an ever-changing selection of carefully curated and catalogued furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture and estate jewelry. French Modernist Gilded Wrought-Iron & Glass Coffee Accent Table ca. 1950s
Located in Shippensburg, PA
MODERNIST GILDED WROUGHT-IRON AND GLASS COFFEE TABLE French, circa 1950s unmarked Item # 401RGG02P-1 An endlessly interesting modernist accent table from the 1950s, it works perfectly both as a side table beside a low sofa or chair or as a coffee or cocktail table. The diminutive stature of the table allows it to be a part of the room without dominating at all, adding texture and visual interest with the brilliantly textured gilt patina while having a great deal of negative space that makes the table feel light, airy and relaxed. The 3/8" thick (and brand new) glass top is set into tiny grooves in the legs, each with a single twisted iron ring hanging from the top with a gentle curved profile that terminates in a stubbed sabot. Ready to place. We acquired this together with a matched pair to this that is almost identical in size but is a simple black patination instead of having the gilt surface on the wrought iron; contact us if you would like to know about the other table. Measurements: 19 1/8" H x 29 5/8" diameter Condition Report: Glass is brand new 3/8" thick tempered clear glass; table in very good condition, light wear to gilding and overall patina in a few spots, incredibly sturdy and solid. A fine ready-to-place presentation. About silla antiques...
