About the Item
Regency Coalport “Imari Dragon” Porcelain Dish Mounted as Cocktail Table,
England, circa 1805–1815,
Porcelain with overglaze enamels; custom wood stand.
This monumental oval dish, transformed into a cocktail table with X-form spindle legs, exemplifies the bold elegance of Regency-period Coalport porcelain. At its center, a vivid blue dragon coils among flowering vines rendered in Kakiemon-inspired hues—soft greens, iron reds, and pale yellows—reflecting the era’s fascination with East Asian design.
Four butterfly-shaped orange panels anchor the composition, each enclosing paired tulip blossoms oriented both inward and outward. Between these, alternating reserves feature either a dominant orange bloom or scattered floral sprays with verdant green foliage, creating a rhythmic interplay of color and form. The deep well rises to a rim encircled with scattered floral motifs and a delicate double blue band.
Coalport’s “Imari Dragon” pattern, produced during the early 19th century, merges Japanese Imari and Kakiemon influences with English porcelain artistry. Pieces of this scale and complexity were likely intended for display in grand interiors, and their survival today—especially in such a functional reinterpretation—speaks to their enduring appeal today.
