Round Teak Coffee Table by Søren Georg Jensen, Denmark 1960s

About the Item

Danish pieces like this coffee table showcase balance with a classic, timeless design. With a clear statement of simplicity and an emphasis on material quality, this table is a great example of “Danish Modern” design. The base is made of solid wood, yet gives a lightweight and airy impression. The large top surface shows off the beautiful pattern of the wood. The main design element is the teak veneered top with an amazing sunburst design. A sunburst is a design or figure commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns; it consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central point in the manner of sunbeams. Thanks in great part to an emphasis on the use of wood, this table has avoided associations with cold industrialisation and machine aesthetics of the era. European (and especially Scandinavian) designers’ predilection for curvilinear shapes and certain woods - often teak - is evident in this coffee table’s circular top and solid wood body. The use of teak veneer with a beautiful grain further gives this table a natural, elemental feel. Countering the shape of the top, the legs and feet have a simple yet beautiful structure with gently rounded edges. The feet are connected at a point at the bottom, showcasing the seamless joinery. The sleek look resulting from the soft lines, functional design and expert craftsmanship make this table a perfect and stylish addition to any dining area. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Visible marks and scratches on the wood. Dimensions: 40.16 in Ø x 21.46 in H 102 cm Ø x 54.5 cm H

"Condor" Coffee Table by Fredrik Schriever Abeln for Örebro Glas, Sweden, 1960s
By Örebro Glasfabrik, Fredrik Schriever-Abeln
Located in Utrecht, NL
Swedish designer, Fredrik Schriever-Abeln’s designs have become quite sought after only in the past years. This is in part due to the beloved design of this “Condor” table being misattributed to Illum Wikkelsø until recently. The distinctive “X” shaped teak base defines this coffee table holding a glass top. The solid wood base is sculpted to perfection, the level of woodwork and precise joinery technique greatly shows off the skills of the craftsman. The structure is made with minimal joinery, the glass top is held solely by the carved “arms”, while the stretcher is joined to the legs with mortise and tenon joints. The balance of the size of the glass top and wooden parts praise the designer’s vision. The modern aesthetic shows that this table - like the Condor chairs...
