About the Item

T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb Oval Walnut Cocktail / Coffee Table This elegant oval coffee or cocktail table was designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb Furniture Company. It was produced in 1954. The beautifully grained walnut table has a thick tapered top, resting on four round legs with gracefully curved feet. The craftsmanship is excellent. This is a rare and sought-after piece, and would blend well in many interiors. Terence Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings (1905–1976) was a British-born architect and furniture designer. In the late 1930s and 1940s, he was the most important decorator in America. After opening a shop on New York’s Madison Avenue in 1936, Robsjohn-Gibbings proceeded to design houses from coast to coast for major patrons, including tobacco heiress Doris Duke, Alfred A. Knopf, and Thelma Chrysler Foy. T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings’ style is hallmarked as a modern mixture of the classical elements of Ancient Grecian design and Art Deco design. His sculptural, sparse, elegant furnishings achieve his trademark brand of modern historicism. Measurements are as follows: 61" W x 31.25" D x 15.5" H
