18th Century, French Walnut Leather Top Writing Table W/ Bronze Hardware

About the Item

Late 18th century hand carved French provincial desk. The desk is carved in walnut and is extremely heavy and sturdy after all the year's of use. The finish has developed a beautiful patina that only comes from years of taking care of the wood by waxing it often. The original hand-tooled leather has faded over the years and has wear that is consistent with years of use. The gold hand-tooling is still visible. There is bronze hardware on the bases of the cabriole legs and on the keyholes. There are four working drawers and a functioning pullout that is also done in embossed leather. The carving on the front of this piece is identical to the back. The drawers in the back are not functioning drawers but the desk can float in a room. This is one of the finest desks I have found over the years.
