19th Century French Walnut Writing Table in the Louis XIII Style
$3,600

About
Hand-carved in France in the 1800’s, this walnut writing table is in the style of Louis XIII. Furniture from this period was quite often made from walnut wood. Turned legs were prevalent, but the wood adjacent to stretchers and aprons were often block-like with rounded ends. Moldings were designed to draw attention to otherwise overlooked areas. Tables were almost always small rectangles that featured quarter-round molding. Our table possesses all these traits.
The top overhangs the base by quite a bit, creating a large writing surface. The apron below has recessed rectangular panels on all four sides, with the front side having a drawer in the center. The drawer is encased by several layers of molding and has an iron pull with a pierced and sinuous backplate.
Each side of the apron is joined to a rectangular block by round dowels. The bottom of each block slopes inwards before transitioning seamlessly to the turned legs. The bases of the spiral legs form square plinths with curved sides that sit on an open rectangular stretcher. Beneath the stretcher are four half bun feet.
A handsome piece, this 19th century French Louis XIII style writing table can still function as originally intended. The warm walnut color would allow you to flank the table with a pair of similarly colored chairs or to use it as a side table.
