Biedermeier Square Walnut Wood Austrian Writing Table Desk, 1830
About the Item
Biedermeier desk from the early 1800s, rich and elaborate in its forms.
All veneered in walnut wood, with inlays in poplar briar wood. The top is well square but its corners are cut straight and do not form a corner. In addition it is veneered in walnut wood but along the edge runs a veneered frame in poplar burl. Its thickness is about an inch or so less than it. The top is dominated by a small walnut veneered drawer with a small brass shield in the middle, which embellishes the key housing. Under four turned columns joined both above and below, give character to the desk. In the upper part the columns are joined by a bow in wood veneered and inlaid in poplar, while below are joined by a shaped wooden slipper. Finally the two sides are held together by a turned wooden footrest. Note the turning of the wooden columns and the shape of the slipper at the bottom, classic Biedermeier style.
