Fine Antique Walnut & Marquetry Inlaid Davenport Desk, England, Circa 1860 An exceptional mid-19th century English Davenport desk, crafted from the finest figured walnut and exquisitely detailed marquetry inlay. This superb example of Victorian cabinetmaking combines functionality with refined decorative artistry.The top features a hinged lid that opens to reveal a fitted interior, ideal for pens and writing instruments. Beneath it, the slant-fronted writing surface lifts to expose a tooled and gilded green leather insert. Inside, the writing compartment is lined in blond maple and includes a concealed storage well and four small interior drawers—two functional and two false—with finely turned handles.The kneehole area is adorned with inlay and flanked by pierced and carved scroll brackets, which rest on elegant columns terminating in acanthus-leaf carved supports.To the right side of the desk are four working drawers, each fitted with a pair of turned pulls; the left side mirrors this arrangement with four corresponding dummy fronts, maintaining visual balance.The desk stands on four compressed bun feet, each set on its original porcelain caster, allowing for graceful movement.
