Gianfranco Frattini 804 Rolltop desk for Bernini, 1962

About the Item

The 804 Secretaire is one of the most significant pieces of Gianfranco Frattini's creative work. Designed in 1962 for Bernini, it highlights Frattini's remarkable design skill and the masterful craftsmanship of the artisans from the historic Bernini company. The 804 is a transformative piece, hiding a surprise within. Through a simultaneous motion of pulling out the top and sliding open a roll-top cover, the 804 transitions from a piece of furniture into a practical writing desk. This change in function and appearance is achieved via a sophisticated mechanism, featuring a perfectly calibrated extraction movement. Inside, it reveals a leather-covered writing surface, an array of delightful small drawers of various sizes, and an unusual compartment for storing items. Beneath the writing surface, there is a central front section with two rows of five spacious drawers. The back of the piece is finished with four open shelves, making it ideal for use as a freestanding piece even in compact living spaces. A transparent glass panel on the top protects the structure without concealing it, while also serving as a functional surface. The entire structure is crafted from fine stained walnut wood and rests on an anodized aluminum base with wooden feet. The 804 Secretaire comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by Bernini, guaranteeing its uniqueness and historical significance. literature: 50+2Y Italian deisgn, Ed.
