About the Item

This rare SCR7 writing desk, designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni and manufactured by Azucena in 1979, is an exceptional example of mid-century Italian design. Its striking form and thoughtful composition reflect Dominioni’s distinctive ability to fuse functionality with aesthetic innovation. The desk features two offset surfaces finished in a high-gloss dark green lacquered wood, giving it a bold yet sophisticated presence. The lacquered finish not only enhances the depth and richness of the color but also adds a tactile smoothness to the surfaces, emphasizing the desk’s sleek, modern appeal. One of the key design elements of this piece is its interplay of planes and lines. The two writing surfaces are intentionally offset, with the lower plane extending outward to create a unique sense of depth and space. The drawers, positioned between the parallel surfaces, appear to float effortlessly, further enhancing the sculptural quality of the design. A polished chrome-plated brass band frames the desk, adding a touch of understated luxury and an element of visual contrast against the dark green lacquer. The chrome brace connecting the two supports is particularly notable, as it seems to pierce the intervening space between the planes, adding a structural elegance to the composition. The overall shape of the desk is gently curved, which lends it a softness and fluidity that contrasts with the more angular elements of the design. The tops are deliberately not parallel, a decision that introduces a playful asymmetry to the piece. This curvature and the varying alignment of the surfaces give the desk a sculptural, almost organic feel, as if it is a natural evolution of the space it inhabits. The desk bears the hallmark of Azucena, with a brass name tag signed inside one of the drawers, marking its authenticity and connection to the legendary Italian design house. This piece was originally purchased together with a custom-made corner shelf with a storage compartment, designed to complement the desk. While the two pieces are available for separate purchase, they were conceived as a cohesive set, and together they create a harmonious workspace that balances aesthetics with practicality. The desk remains in fantastic original condition, showing no significant signs of wear beyond what would be expected from its time. The lacquer finish is smooth and unblemished, and the chrome details retain their shine. It is a rare opportunity to own a piece of design history in such pristine condition. This is for the SCR7 desk only.
