About the Item

RICHARD BRIDGENS PARTNERS DESK & CHAIRS Stock Number: 37331 A rare English architectural partners desk in oak with its original tooled leather top. With three drawers on each side, the whole raised on barley twist legs at the corners and renaissance inspired central legs, all joined and standing on a shaped stepped base. Ensuite with two side chairs and a desk chair. To be checked over and polished in our workshops before delivery. Richard Bridgens (1785-1846) was a multifaceted individual, known primarily for his work as an architect, furniture-maker, and author. He married Maria Ann Shaw in 1816, with whom he had children that were baptized in London. Bridgens worked alongside the notable cabinet maker George Bullock until Bullock’s death in 1818. During his career in London from 1814 to 1819, Bridgens took over the Abbotsford project from Bullock for Sir Walter Scott. He also designed a porch at James Watt Jr.’s house in 1836. Bridgens’ furniture designs were distinguished and often inspired by Gothic and Baronial styles. His works included ceremonial armchairs in English oak with intricate Gothic design elements and dark, heavily carved woods influenced by Scottish Renaissance architecture. He is noted for his contributions to the furnishing of Battle Abbey, Aston Hall in Birmingham, and Abbotsford House, the latter being the home of Sir Walter Scott. Bridgens’ designs contributed to the romantic view of Scotland, aligning with the themes in Scott’s novels. In 1826, Bridgens moved to Trinidad following his wife’s inheritance of the St Clair estate from her father. There, he became the Superintendent of Public Works and designed government offices in Port of Spain. His time in Trinidad lasted until his death in November 1846. During this period, he also published notable works such as “Furniture with Candelabra and interior decoration” (2nd ed. 1831) and “West India Scenery” (1836). Bridgens’ career is a testament to his versatility and impact in the fields of architecture, furniture design, and literature, reflecting a unique blend of artistic and practical talents.
