About the Item

This 'Nya Guldheden' desk was created by one of Sweden's best known furniture designers : Carl Malmsten. Born in Stockholm in 1888 and died in 1972, the artist spent his life creating practical furniture inspired by authentic Swedish craftsmanship which he admired. He soon became a reference in furniture design, being commissioned to create for clients from all over the world. To give future generations the taste of furniture design as he perceived it, he founded two schools which still offer courses today. Malmsten was also known by his contemporaries to oppose the then penchant for functionalism in architecture and design. This 1960's desk is a beautiful summary of the creator's liking of noble materials such as walnut wood, the elegance along with the simplicity of the lines and the lightness of it golden colour - which is actually what the Swedish appellation 'Nya Guldheden' stands for, literally meaning 'new golden colour'. The desk is patinated on the top. We gently restored it without making it look new. The desk also conserves the original key.

Swedish Modern teak/birch long coffe table Bruno Mathsson, 1950's
By Bruno Mathsson
Located in Uccle, BE
From the Annika series. 1950's. Stamped. Patinated wood. As the descendant of four generations of Swedish master cabinetmakers, Bruno Mathsson was born to design furniture. Mathsson was known as a methodical perfectionist who made usefulness the fundamental attribute of his works, yet he was also a ceaseless experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in form, materials and methods of making. Like the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, Mathsson was one of the first Scandinavians to embrace undulating, biomorphic forms in furniture. His early pieces such as the Eva and Pernilla series of chairs incorporate dramatically flowing bent beechwood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century design. Mathsson was also a pioneer of ergonomics — he is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression his body made when he sat in a snow bank — and used supple, accommodating woven webbing for seats. His concern for practicality is shown by pieces such as the Maria table. An elegant design with gate legs and hinged leaves, the table measures more than nine feet long when fully extended, but folds down to just nine inches in thickness. From the mid-1940s through the 1950s, Mathsson focused on architecture, designing and building houses with insulated, triple-glazed window walls...
