About the Item

This sculptural table by John Dickinson is crafted from galvanized steel, meticulously formed to resemble flowing draped fabric. Brass trim outlines the contours of the piece, while an internal steel structure with adjustable feet provides stability. Signed with a brass plaque reading “John Dickinson / SUTHERLAND.” The surface was originally clear-coated to preserve the metal and protect it over time. This piece exemplifies Dickinson’s ability to elevate everyday forms into poetic and functional art objects, balancing visual wit with lasting craftsmanship. More about the Designer John Dickinson (1920–1982) was a San Francisco-based designer known for his imaginative, often surreal approach to interiors and furniture. Using materials like plaster, wood, and metal, he created pieces that played with illusion—rigid forms that appeared soft, playful shapes with classical roots. His work blends historical references with a modern sensibility, resulting in a body of design that is both conceptually rich and visually striking. Though produced in limited numbers, Dickinson’s creations have become icons of American design and are now part of major museum and private collections worldwide. Origination: USA, 1970s. Purchased from private collection, Switzerland. Condition: Good overall. Signs of use in the form of scratches in the clear coat on the top surface - some corrosion to the brass and loss of finish as per images. Other than a normal clean up, we have left this piece untouched. Materials: Brass, steel Approximate Dimensions: Height: 70 cm Width: 140.5 cm Depth: 69.5 cm

Polished and brushed metal console "Gerbe" by Maria Pergay, France c.1970
By Maria Pergay
Located in Renens, CH
French design stainless steel console "Gerbe" by Maria Pergay, France c. 1970 Edited by Design Steel around 1970, the company that Maria Pergay founded with Marina Varenne in Paris in 1970 and which edited the designers pieces until 1977 when Maria Pergay decided to take over the business alone. The heavy structure of the console is in mirror polished and brushed stainless steel. The use of these two steel textures is typical for Pergay throughout her creations. The half moon shaped top in thick dark grey tinted glass matches perfectly with the impressive stainless steel structure. The NYC based gallery Demisch Danant has recently curated an exhibition called Precious Strength which shed a new light on Maria Pergay's work confirming her place in the history of french 20th century design. Maria Pergay (1930-2023) is known for her innovative use of stainless steel—a passion that began in the 1960s and has continued into her eighties. Born in Romania of Russian-Jewish descent, Pergay escaped to Paris with her mother at age six at the onset of WWII. After the war, Pergay studied costume, set design, and sculpture, and opened a shop in Paris’s Place des Vosges to sell her decorative silver objects. Upon a commission to work with steel, Pergay began to create her now iconic stainless steel furniture, with her first collection including the renowned Flying Carpet daybed (1968) and the Ring chair...

Original Production John Dickinson Galvanized Steel Drape End Table, Signed
By John Dickinson
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This exceptionally rare and high-sought after collectors item is the John Dickinson model #107 drape end table with trompe-l'œil fabric motif in galvanized steel and brass binding. This piece of functional fine art is suited for a design collector, art investor or an interior designer looking to impress a hard-to-please client who wants nothing but the best of the best. This iconic 1970s American design by John Dickinson was later produced by Sutherland, and even the Sutherland examples have great worth and collectibility. But nothing compares to the originals, like this one. An interior steel frame with adjustable feet gives this table ample sturdiness and is suited for regular every-day use - but can also be used as an impressive stand-alone sculpture. Original John Dickinson pieces are exceptionally hard to find. This example of the galvanized steel trompe l'oeil draped tablecloth table...
