About the Item

This rare and large executive writing desk, crafted by the renowned Belgian furniture designer Jules Wabbes during the 1960s, showcases a sturdy top made from wengé wood. The top is meticulously formed using tangentially sawn wenge slats, creating an exquisite pattern that adds to its visual appeal. Complementing the wooden top is a geometric chrome-plated steel base, which harmoniously interacts with the distinctive material of the tabletop. The desk's construction and joints are deliberately exposed, highlighting its well-thought-out composition and design. Transparency is a key element, encouraging an appreciation for every detail. Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) held a prominent position among Belgian furniture designers and interior architects in the Postwar era. Originating from Brussels, he embarked on a diverse career path, initially pursuing acting before exploring antiques and restoration. At the age of 24, Wabbes established an antiques shop that required him to undertake furniture restoration. Through this necessity, he honed his skills in furniture design and craftsmanship. Unlike his contemporaries, he lacked formal training in design or architecture, shaping his expertise through hands-on experience. In addition to restoration work, Wabbes ventured into furniture design, which proved exceptionally successful. His achievements led him to undertake numerous interior design projects for his clients. Furthermore, he became a professor at the Sint-Lucas Institute in Brussels in 1971. Unfortunately, Wabbes' life was tragically cut short by cancer in 1974. His legacy is characterized by an aristocratic and unassuming style, marked by a sensual utilization of materials and a clear, almost architectural structural approach. Wabbes developed a distinctive design language that diverged from the whimsical and exuberant trends prevalent in Postwar furniture design. Drawing inspiration from American designers like Edward Wormley, he favored solid wood construction, resulting in designs that radiate opulence while maintaining an air of authenticity, timelessness, and refined aesthetics.
