Fabulous modern boat shaped dining table or conference table by Jens Risom for Howe Furniture. Comprised of walnut veneer and chrome cylinder legs. Gorgeous age and use appropriate condition with a couple of minor dings in work surface and a small nick on one corner. Please see photos, circa 1970s-1980s.
MY, OH MY!!!! This table will almost take your breath away!! Just stunning!! This modern boat shaped table by the iconic Jens Risom for Howe Furniture will certainly make your dining experience much more prestigious and demand attention when in conference! The table is comprised of sultry walnut veneer and four chrome cylinder shaped legs that are inserted into the tabletop. The metal framework below the legs is easily removeable for shipping and appropriate tool is included. It’s a unique, simple, yet stunning design that only Jens Risom could create. It will couple nicely with any style dining chairs or conference room seating.
Howe Furniture was founded in 1928 in Connecticut by Harald Howe. Inspired by the early Bauhaus movement, and the principle of form following function, Howe started making just about any furniture that was simple and flexible. Tables, wooden hat racks, etc. Harald Howe laid the foundation for a strong, international, architect-led brand that would become well-known in Europe and the United States throughout the 20th century and still today.
Jens Risoms career spans nearly sixty years. He began his study of design in 1935 at the Copenhagen workshop in Kaare Klint and joined Ernst Kuhn’s architectural office in 1938, where he designed furniture and interiors. In 1939 Risom emigrated to the United States and in 1941 he designed the first chair manufactured by Knoll. He continued to create simple, well-crafted modern furniture with Knoll and George Jenson but eventually in 1946, established his own studio, Jens Risom Design. In 1973, Risom opened a new firm called Design Control whose clients include Howe Furniture Company and Gaylord. Now in his eighties his work continues to reflect the Danish approach to modernism and values the human need for beauty, warmth, and simplicity.

Jens Risom
The Danish-born Jens Risom brought the Scandinavian modern design sensibility to a wide audience in the United States. As the first designer for Knoll Inc., Risom introduced American buyers to the region’s enduring design values of simplicity, grace and craftsmanship.
Risom trained in furniture making at the Copenhagen School of Industrial Arts and Design under Ole Wanscher, alongside classmates Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen. In 1939, a year after graduating from business school, Risom decided to move to the U.S.
While working for an interior designer in New York in 1941, he met Hans Knoll, and the businessman and the designer hit it off. They brought out their first line the next year, despite wartime materials restrictions. The signature piece — now a design icon — was a lounge chair with a striking, undulant birch frame and a seat made of webbed sub-military grade parachute straps. Risom was drafted into the army, and served as a translator under General George Patton. When he returned from the war, Risom clashed over furniture design ideals with his business partner’s new bride, Florence Knoll, the pioneering mid-century modernist who was schooled in the Bauhaus method, which favored furniture with strict, geometric metal frames. Risom then started his own company, Jens Risom Design.
In the course of his long career, Risom developed a stylistic vocabulary that was a reflection of the life of the man himself: his furniture has Danish warmth coupled with an American air of crisp efficiency. Vintage Risom chairs are almost instantly recognizable — the arms and seat backs are set at a distinctive angle that seems to invite people to sit back and relax, yet they know they can hop up in an instant, ready to go.
As you will see on these pages, Jens Risom is one of the great men of American modern design who made furniture that is unique and timeless.

Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. We have noticed a few minor nicks and dings on the top and along the edges. This is a TITANIC of a table!!! Lol… It’s super large!! It is comprised of gorgeous oak veneer with solid oak applied to both ends… kind of a modified trestle style dining table with slab legs, and beautiful bullnose edge on said top and legs. The added solid oak ends are separated from the veneered top by a narrow-blackened groove which sets this detail off nicely. It is absolutely stunning!! It is a colossal 96 inches long and seats eight comfortably, but you may fit ten if the chairs are a bit narrower or you straddle the legs. The legs are recessed 6.5 inches, so straddling is not a large obstacle. In addition, although the natural oak is beautiful, we can also see this being ebonized with a little black dye. Incredible!!! It will be fabulous in your dining room or as a lovely conference table at the office! It is modern in style, but it will host oodles of options of dining or office chairs! We have LOTS of chairs...

Magnificent vintage Scandinavian Modern Gudme Mobelfabrik of Denmark teak expanding dining or conference table with 2 leaves. This piece has been attributed based upon archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials however, it is not signed or marked in any way. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, the top has been refinished. There were a couple spots where the veneer was sanded through right on the edge where the 2 halves come together. They have been filled and colored. There are also a couple scratches that were so deep they can still be seen but not felt. It was given a topcoat of polyurethane. Highly black lacquered on the legs and one side of the base top and the top side has a veneer inlay with abstract geometric designs in colors of gold, green, red, blue, and yellow. 3/4-inch-thick rectangle glass top with 1 1/2-inch bevel. Is there anything as wondrous as being Au Naturel??? When it comes to something as ravishing as this natural walnut table… we think NOT!!! That’s right, this is an enchanting natural walnut conference or dining table with a handsome black powder coated steel tube base featuring a center walnut panel bearing a hint of a Brutalist design with graduating stacked horizontal cut outs, custom made in Lawrence, Kansas by woodworking artist Matthew Jarmer. The base insets and the rectangular top were crafted from locally sourced wood from Topeka, Kansas. Good ‘Ol T-Town!!! Check out that magnificent wood grain!!! It’s simply marvelous!!! The table edges are “semi natural” as there has been some sanding but it’s not completely smooth, some of the uneven natural knotty tones of the wood come through. The center of the table exhibits a unique feature utilizing a beautiful natural split which created an opening that only Mother Nature (and maybe some hand crafted mastery from Mr. Jarmer!) could design. It is convenient for phone and other device cords if you are using it as a conference or worktable, but it would also serve as an INCREDIBLE dining table!! Talk about a BOLD statement piece!!
