History of the manufacturer
The growth of James Phillips and Sons Ltd., the house furnishers, of Union Street, Bristol, can be traced through five generations of the family. Indeed, the House of Phillips, as it is popularly known, is one of the oldest furnishing businesses in the city a business which has grown from the humble beginning of a one-man shop. It was founded by Mr. John Phillips, a man of limited means, the great-great-grandfather of the present managing director, Mr. Jack Phillips, who has been with the firm for 31 years.
The date of the foundation of the company is not, as a matter of fact, known to within a year or so, although it is known that John Phillips spent most of his life at sea in the stirring days of the Napoleonic wars. With his voyages abroad he collected clocks and other readily portable objects for disposal back home in England.
When John Phillips finally left the sea and returned he took for a living a trade he had served a roving apprenticeship and set up shop, it is believed, in West Street, St. Philips, round the turn of the century.
It was from such adventurous foundations that he was able to build a solid, though at first modest, business, which he saw gradually expand. After his death, his son, Edward Phillips, helped the business to thrive into what was for those days quite an important establishment with two shops in the Broadmead of the 1800s.
