Antique French Louis Philippe Period Flame Mahogany Small Games Table

About the Item

A scarce early Louis Philippe period (1830-1848) game table. Born in France in the early/mid-19th century, extremely rare and hard to find in these small proportions as they were only produced for a very short amount of time following the Restoration period (detailed explanation below). Hand-crafted of warm solid mahogany and richly figured flame mahogany (also known as feather or crotch cut swirl mahogany), circa 1830, finished in classic Empire taste, sewing stand - work table size, having a brass hinged flip-top that swivels into position, opening to reveal a paneled top with oval gilt embroidery framed green baize felt-like fabric surface. Rotating the top also reveals a concealed hidden compartment with divided interior and slotted chip rack, atop the simple frieze belt fitted with a single drawer featuring hand cut dovetail joinery, wooden keyhole escutcheon, working lock and original skeleton key. Rising on four tall straight turned and reeded carved legs. History of Louis Philippe style furniture: Louis Philippe ruled France between 1830 and 1848. This style became fashionable during his reign, eventually getting its name from the monarch. In the years following the French Revolution and after the fall of Napoleon, aristocrats, who had fled the country during the French Revolution, returned, and quickly realized that their furniture and belongings had been confiscated, seized and sold during and after the Revolution, and they had little money to buy new expensive pieces. During the short lived Bourbon Dynasty Restauration (1815-1830), the ruler, King Louis XVIII (1815-1823) preferred the Empire style, so French furniture made in this design continued. After King Charles X (1823-1830) issued reparations wealthy families were once again able to purchase high-quality furniture. Cabinetmakers resumed the tradition of innovative design. The increasingly affluent middle class also sought well-made pieces, leading to a higher demand for French furniture. Many of these people, while wealthy, lived in small houses and apartments. Their need for pieces that fit in their homes resulted in pieces that are still highly sought-after because of their small size, such as this remarkable petite antique games - cards table. Louis Philippe furniture was functional, elegant, but still very simple. These characteristics have helped contribute to the style’s longevity. Today, Louis Philippe pieces remain highly sought-after and stylish items. Condition: The table is in great shape overall, especially considering its almost 200 years old. Presents well, with beautifully aged patina over the whole. Strong, sturdy, stable and structurally sound. Retaining original antique character marks, including age related split to top, veneer chips, trim loss, likely later ill fitting green felt surface, evidence of minor old repairs and touchups. All wear and tear consistent with age and indicative of use. Nothing that detracts from the display or functionality, but only adds to the elegant warmth and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over long periods of time.
